Bajrang Setu: India’s First 132-Metre Cable Glass Bridge to Open in Rishikesh by December 2025

India is set to welcome a new architectural wonder in the spiritual city of Rishikesh, as the state government of Uttarakhand prepares to inaugurate the Bajrang Setu, the country’s first 132-metre-long cable glass suspension bridge. This one-of-a-kind structure, inspired by the divine architecture of Kedarnath Temple, is expected to open to the public by December 2025.

A Modern Marvel Replacing the Iconic Laxman Jhula

The Bajrang Setu will officially replace the century-old Laxman Jhula, an iconic structure built in 1929 that had to be permanently closed in 2019 due to safety concerns. For decades, Laxman Jhula symbolized Rishikesh’s spiritual essence and connected locals and pilgrims across the Ganga River, linking the villages of Tapovan and Jonk. With Bajrang Setu, the government aims to preserve that heritage while introducing a safer, stronger, and more modern alternative.

Design and Dimensions

The bridge stretches 132 metres in length and 8 metres in width, integrating stainless steel, glass panels, and resilient cable systems to ensure both strength and spectacle. The two main towers of Bajrang Setu have been modelled after the sanctum of Kedarnath Temple, reflecting Uttarakhand’s deep spiritual tradition and its reputation as Devbhoomi (Land of the Gods). Each tower showcases carvings of Lord Kedarnath and Lord Badrinath, reinforcing the state’s religious symbolism.

The bridge’s design combines modern engineering with spiritual inspiration, offering visitors an immersive experience where devotion meets innovation. Constructed at an estimated cost of ₹70 crore, the Bajrang Setu stands as a testament to the government’s push for sustainable tourism and world-class infrastructure.

Thrilling Glass Walkways

One of the bridge’s most exciting features is its 1.5-metre-wide transparent glass walkways on both sides. Made from 66 mm thick toughened glass panels, these pedestrian paths give visitors a breathtaking view of the turquoise waters of the Ganga below. The central deck, however, has a 5-metre-wide steel lane to allow two-wheelers and light vehicles to pass safely.

This architectural design ensures a fusion of functionality and thrill — perfect for those seeking both adventure and peace in the yoga capital of the world.

Tourism and Cultural Impact

Rishikesh, already renowned for its yoga, rafting, and ashram culture, is expected to see a massive tourism boost once Bajrang Setu opens. The transparent bridge will offer photographers, trekkers, and global travellers a new vantage point of the Himalayas and the flowing Ganga — turning it into a must-visit destination.

Local businesses, particularly tour operators and hotels, anticipate an increase in footfall, paralleling what happened after the inauguration of the Atal Setu in Goa and Chenab Bridge in Jammu & Kashmir.

Uttarakhand’s tourism department has also announced plans to integrate Bajrang Setu into the Chardham Yatra circuit, further boosting pilgrimage tourism. This new bridge will thus serve not just as an infrastructure project but as a spiritual and cultural landmark.

Engineering and Safety Standards

The Public Works Department (PWD) reported that 90% of the construction has been completed, with final glass installations and safety testing underway. Project engineer Praveen Karnwal confirmed that the bridge will be handed over to the administration by early 2026, following the final safety and load-bearing tests.

The bridge is built to withstand natural challenges such as high winds and seismic activity, adhering to advanced safety protocols. Engineers designed the foundation to absorb dynamic loads while maintaining maximum stability across the river span.

Visual Spectacle and Sustainability

Beyond being an engineering marvel, Bajrang Setu is also an environmental model. With enhanced pedestrian access and restrictions on heavy traffic, it promotes eco-friendly commuting. Solar-powered lighting will illuminate the structure, creating a mesmerizing glow at night — a visual reflection of Rishikesh’s tranquil evenings along the ghats.

The bridge’s glass flooring is constructed with renewable materials and has undergone multiple safety calibrations to ensure it can bear static crowds as well as movement without stress fractures.

What Visitors Can Expect

When Bajrang Setu opens in December 2025, visitors will be able to enjoy:

  • Panoramic views of Rishikesh and the Ganges River.
  • Safe glass walkways, blending thrill and serenity.
  • Quick connectivity between Tapovan and Jonk.
  • Spiritual sculptures representing Kedarnath and Badrinath shrines.

It is also expected that pedestrian-only days will be introduced for safety and crowd management, especially during festivals like Ganga Dussehra and International Yoga Day, when Rishikesh sees a surge in visitors.

Conclusion

As India embraces modern architecture rooted in cultural heritage, Bajrang Setu stands as a symbol of progress and spirituality coexisting in perfect harmony. Once inaugurated, it will redefine Rishikesh’s skyline — a shining testament to innovation, faith, and adventure.

With its transparent base, temple-inspired towers, and breathtaking river views, Bajrang Setu is set to become India’s newest global attraction, where visitors can quite literally walk on air above the sacred Ganga.
