Reliance Launches $15 Billion AI Infrastructure Drive to Shape India’s Digital Future

Reliance Industries Limited, India’s most valuable corporation, has launched an unprecedented $15 billion investment drive to establish the nation’s largest and most advanced artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem. At the intersection of world-class infrastructure, global technology alliances, and homegrown innovation, Reliance aims to transform India’s digital landscape and set new benchmarks for the rapidly-evolving, trillion-dollar AI sector.

A Bold Vision for India’s Digital Future

Announced at Reliance’s annual general meeting, Chairman Mukesh Ambani unveiled an ambitious four-pillar AI strategy under the new subsidiary, Reliance Intelligence. “We are laying the foundations of digital sovereignty and making India the home of trusted, world-class AI for every sector and citizen,” Ambani noted.

Unfolding over the next several years, this strategic push will build the critical infrastructure, partnerships, and talent pool required to thrust India into leadership on the global AI stage.

Mega Data Center Rises in Gujarat

The centerpiece of the plan is a 1-gigawatt (GW) data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat, carefully designed to anchor India’s largest AI compute platform. Construction of the first phase is already underway, with Reliance underwriting roughly a quarter of the 1GW capacity—equivalent to a $7 billion infrastructure investment and $5 billion earmarked for 250MW of chips run in-house. The remaining capacity will be leased to hyperscalers and large AI solution providers on a “Datacenter as a Service” basis.

Professionals tracking the project expect the facility to eventually reach 3GW, which would make it the world’s largest by data center power. Notably, the complex will tap into Reliance’s renewable energy ecosystem, ensuring a green, future-ready foundation for massive AI workloads and serving as a model for sustainable digital infrastructure at scale.

Meta Partnership: A Strategic Force Multiplier

On October 24, Reliance formalized a landmark partnership with Meta (formerly Facebook), forming Reliance Enterprise Intelligence Limited (REIL). Backed by an initial Rs 855 crore ($100 million) investment, the joint venture leverages Meta’s global expertise in open-source AI models—like Llama—and Reliance’s vast data pool and business network. The structure: Reliance Intelligence holds 70%, and Meta subsidiary Facebook Overseas holds 30%.

REIL’s flagship offerings will include:

  • An enterprise-grade AI platform-as-a-service, customizable for various verticals
  • Pre-configured solutions for critical business operations such as marketing, customer support, and IT
  • Integration of Meta’s Llama models with India’s unique languages, regulations, and market needs

Together, Meta and Reliance aim to not just localize but also globalize India-born AI innovations, taking them to other emerging markets worldwide.

The Four Pillars of Reliance’s AI Push

  1. Gigawatt-Scale Data Centers: A unified network of AI-ready hyperscale data centers, powering both the Indian economy and international AI markets.
  2. Strategic Global Partnerships: Collaborations with industry leaders such as Meta, bringing together technology, expertise, and scale faster than rivals.
  3. Enterprise and Consumer AI Services: Creation of advanced AI products for every business and consumer segment in India—from education, healthcare, and banking to logistics and small business empowerment.
  4. Talent and Skills Development: Nurturing a new wave of homegrown talent through world-class research programs, specialized training, and real-world innovation labs.

Monetizing AI: A Sustainable Business Model

According to Morgan Stanley, each megawatt of data center capacity could generate annual revenues of $1.5–1.6 million, with a projected return on capital employed of approximately 11%. Analysts forecast India’s demand for high-grade AI capacity to soar as local enterprises migrate to AI-first business models, unlocking further opportunities for Reliance Intelligence.

With plans to support more than 20GW of internal digital energy demand—sourced from Reliance’s growing solar panel capacity—the company is positioning itself as both a technology and energy leader.

Driving Inclusive Growth

Reliance is clear: the goal is not just tech leadership, but inclusive growth. The company’s roadmap aims to democratize AI, making tools and platforms affordable for students, public-sector agencies, and MSMEs. Custom generative models, built in India and for India, will address local languages, compliance needs, and industry-specific use-cases—helping bridge digital divides.

Industry Experts: A Game-Changer for India

Industry leaders and analysts are unanimous that this level of investment and integration is unprecedented in India and likely to spark a new wave of innovation and talent development. India will emerge not just as a key consumer, but as a global exporter of AI-ready products and intellectual property.

Looking Ahead

As construction accelerates on the Jamnagar campus and the Meta partnership deepens, Reliance is set to redefine India’s role in the global AI ecosystem. Hands-on products from REIL will soon roll out to enterprises, while the data center campus becomes the beating heart of India’s AI ambitions.
